This does not mean these history features are not available in other apps, but the Desktop Application is by far the most versatile way to access OneNote notebooks, and is still the way I would recommend accessing your notebooks primarily. Just a heads up that we will be hanging out in the History tab in the desktop PC application of OneNote for all of the features described below. One of the most exciting abilities in the History tab is the Page Versions feature. Just like your OneDrive documents, by default OneNote is keeping track of different versions of each page in your notebook. Go to the History tab, History group and select the dropdown for Page Versions.Notice on the right side, old page versions will appear shaded in grey.To restore a page version, or see more options, click on the gold bar that appears at the top of the scren. There are a couple more options worth mentioning in the dropdown for Page Versions, including the ability to: OneNote isn’t available for Linux, though it is available as a web-based app, as a desktop app for Windows and Mac, and as a mobile app for Android and iOS devices. Delete all versions in a section, group or notebook.Disable history for this notebook (not recommended).Relatedly, you can search by recent edits made to a notebook. This can be especially helpful with notebooks you are sharing with others. In the History tab, Authors group, select the Recent Edits dropdown.ģ.Search results will appear on the right side of the screen, with edited pages highlighted in yellow. Here is another great tool to keep you organized if you are sharing your notebook: the ability to search by author.ġ. Go to the History tab, Authors group and select Find by Author.Ģ. On the right, you can refine your search by a specific author. I hope you find these History tricks useful for your OneNote notebooks! If you find a handy use for these features, or have any questions, please feel free to drop me a line. It’s a potentially powerful tool for indexing and interlinking anything you’re working on in OneNote.Congratulations, Power Users!Ĭongratulations to our newest Power Users! This can not only link to items within your current notebook, but also to items in other notebooks you’ve created. Pasting this link into your document creates a hyperlink to that paragraph clicking the link takes you right to that paragraph. Secondary-click on a paragraph in your document, for example, and a menu appears offering the option to Copy Link to Paragraph. One thing I really like about OneNote is how easily it allows you to link notebooks and pages together. OneNote’s formatting tools will be familiar to anyone who has used an Office application. Furthermore, pasting data from an Excel spreadsheet did not insert that data into the appropriate cells in a OneNote table it pasted everything into the first cell of the selected cells. While you can format individual cells within tables using a table formatting tool, you can’t perform even the most basic calculations. ![]() The same is true of tables, although I found that the table feature was a bit underdeveloped. You don’t have as many formatting options, but there are plenty enough to help you differentiate your text on the page. This, of course, begs the question, “How do I print my document?” The answer is, you don’t: There is no print option available in the application, although it is possible to export a page as a PDF file and print the resulting file.Īny text you add to the page can be formatted in much the same way you can in Word. OneNote for Mac lets you put your information anywhere that works for you on the page.Īccording to Microsoft, there is no limit to either the width or the length of your pages, so it’s conceivable you could create a massive document that stretches in both the X and Y dimensions. You can then drag that text where you want it on the page. Want to add a text note? Click anywhere on the page and start typing, and that’s where your text appears. Every page in OneNote is freeform, allowing you to add text, images, links to webpages, tables, and other bits of information anywhere you want you aren’t constrained spatially in the same way you are in a normal word-processing application. ![]() One thing that makes OneNote interesting compared to Evernote is the flexibility it gives you when adding information to a page.
